European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
