The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
