Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
